In the story, Honey Bunny, La Flaca struggles to hold onto her past in Colombia. She tries to speak to her drug dealer in Spanish, but “the words don’t come… so she has to say it in English instead” (118). However, even though La Flaca shows this unwillingness to let go of her Colombian heritage, she also demonstrates her need to escape from her past, for she inhales cocaine in order to forget where she is. In this way, La Flaca struggles between a desire to reclaim her past for herself and a desire to forget where she came from, and simply live.
