In the story, Julisa, Eduardo is silenced when he loses three fingers on his right hand after exposing corruption in the Colombian government. Even the schools are corrupt, for in Eduardo’s school, it is normal for students to “attend school regularly for weeks, months, even years, then suddenly never be seen again” (193). In this way, Pachico demonstrates the decayed and corrupt state of Colombian politics and economics at the time of the conflict.
