In the story, The Bird Thing, Angelina’s poverty makes her a target of sexual assault for the executive of a company. This assault results in Angelina’s poverty, which further plunges her into poverty, for she must work as a servant in order to send money to California to support her son. In this way, the author offers a critique Colombian society during the time of the Colombian conflict.
