The Lucky Ones
How does Pachicho link the impoverishment of the upper and lower classes?

The Lucky Ones
Pachico implies that it is not only the lower classes, but also the upper classes that suffer from this impoverishment. During “The Bird Thing,” Angelina memories of bodies drowning in the river are in sequence with Stephanie and her friend swimming in the pool. In this way, Pachico implies that just as members of the lower class drown from political corruption, so too will members of the upper class, for both are found in water. This implication is furthered through the story’s pregnant women. Angelina is raped by an executive, and must send her child away so that he can have a better life. During this story, the reader discovers that Stephanie’s mother is pregnant as well. However, the reader knows that Stephanie’s mother’s child will eventually die at Mariela’s father’s party, five years later. In this way, Pachico suggests that both the upper and lower classes will suffer from the political corruption and violence of the Colombian conflict.
