In “Honey Bunny,” La Flaca uses drugs to her own self-destruction, for the drugs enable her to forget about both her past and future. In “Junkie Rabbit,” the herd is totally under the influence of the drugs, and without the drugs, they resort to cannibalism. In “The Tourists,” this theme of self-destruction is not shown through drugs, but instead, through Mariela’s father’s political decisions. In the story, Mariela’s father decides that he and Mariela are “not going anywhere” (147) despite being warned that the rebels are coming for him and his family specifically. Mariela’s father bears traces of this self-destructive tendency on his body, for he is missing three of his fingers and is scarred.
