How do Mariela's "imagination games" differ from Penelope's?

Mariela imagines a time machine in the girls’ world; then, she imagines that the Nazis are chasing the girls. Mariela does not let the girls imagine that they are tigers, instead forcing the girls to pretend they are captured animals.
