Why did Subhash delay beginning his education at the Bengali Medium School for boys in the novel, The Lowland?

The year Subhash was set to begin his studies at the bengaki Medium School, Udayan made it clear that he was unhappy Subhash was going without him. To appease his brother, Subhash waited and they went together the following year.
