Why don't the boys file a police report in the novel, The Love of a Good Woman?

When they near the police station, the boys remember that it will be full of retired men sitting around gossiping, smoking, playing cards, and drinking coffee. When they think about having to walk through this crowd of older men and then make a report in front of them, they are cowed and walk right past the police station door.
