In a time and place where people with disabilities are often mocked, why does no one mock Mr. Box in the novel, The Love of a Good Woman?

There are two main reasons why no one mocks Mr. Box. He was once a highly skilled athlete, and people remember and respect this. Also, he is a funny, cheerful person who does not complain about his pain and problems.
