In an undisclosed village and place, during June, the villagers routinely gather to commit ritual murder of one of the villagers. The names are drawn out of a black box. The unlucky person who draws the paper with the black dot on it is stoned to death by the others. Tessie is the character that says the lottery is unfair. She dies anyway.
