What effect does Piper have on Jason at the beginning of the story?

At the beginning of the story Jason wakes up holding Piper's hand and without knowing who she is. Nevertheless, he finds her very attraction. She has long dark hair, big brown eyes and her lack of make-up accentuates rather takes away from her loveliness.
