How do the heroes cut the tendrils on Hera's cage?

They heroes race over to Hera's cage and Piper begins talking to the earth tendrils holding it together, persuading them to go to sleep. As she does, the tendrils get softer, turning from rock to tree roots. Leo then cuts them with a circular saw.
