Jenoff divides the novel in 32 chapters of approximately the same length, bookended by an opening quote by Winston Churchill and an Author’s Note at the beginning and end, respectively. Each of the chapters begins with the name Eleanor, Grace, or Marie, indicating from whose perspective the following chapter is written. Normally the chapters rotate in no particular order between the three women until after Chapter 26, which is the final chapter told from Marie’s perspective. On occasion characters will have chapters occur in sequence, specifically as the narrative shifts to focus on Eleanor’s efforts to uncover the fates of her agents toward the end of the novel.
