Jenoff’s novel focuses on three main protagonists: Eleanor, Marie, and Grace. Each chapter begins with the name of the character from whose perspective Jenoff writes. Jenoff uses a third-person limited narration, which limits the reader to information accessible to the character from whose perspective the story is told, but also opens the reader to the inner thoughts, emotions, motivations, and conflicts. The novel therefore takes on an extremely personal tone, allowing the reader to come to know the three women intimately as it progresses.
