Overall, the language of the novel is accessible and prosaic, especially the dialogue between characters. Although the novel deals with many specifically military concepts, such as espionage and subterfuge, Jenoff avoids using overly technical and specific terminology, instead opting for largely familiar terms. This work choice indicates that the importance of the novel comes not in its technical aspects, but instead in the interpersonal relationships between characters.
