Why did Herriot think the cow with the Cesarian section would die?

Herriot was certain the cow who he performed the Cesarian section on would die because of the stomach fluid and contents that leaked into her stomach, as well as all the dirt and straw the calf deposited into his mother's incision when it tried to nurse.
