What did Mr. Ripley call Herriot away from dinner to do at the beginning of the book?

Mr. Ripley called Herriot away from a Sunday dinner to see to one of his cows that he thought had a broken leg. When Herriot arrived he found it was just a hobnail that had become embedded in the cow's foot.
