What did Herriot say would have happened had he been present for the actual delivery of his daughter, and why is this so ironic?

It is interesting to note that despite the veterinary procedures Herriot carries out on a daily basis, he believed he would have passed out had he been allowed to watch his own wife give birth to their baby.
