The Light Pirate
What is the importance of the grotto in the novel, The Light Pirate?
.
.
The grotto where Wanda travels to secure fresh water for herself is an example of both natural beauty and the capacity for friendship. The manatees that Wanda encounters there buttress the surprising tonal shift in the later passages of the novel, away from struggle and discomfort and into reverence for the natural world that has reclaimed what was once human civilization.
