Why does Myrtle decide that she will not fire Jeanne in Chapter Twelve?

While discussing Erasmus' death, Myrtle hears a sound and fears someone is listening at the door, but they find no one there. Her immediate concern is that one of the servants overheard the conversation and Myrtle, fearing it might have been Jeanne, says they will not fire her after all.
