Chapter 8 is titled “A Stained Character.” When Myrtle and Faith return home, Miles informs them that he and Erasmus were banned from the excavation site. He also says Erasmus received a letter, that it made him angry, and he burned it. Myrtle reveals that she was snubbed in town, but Miles says it would have been worse in Kent. In the house, Mrs. Vellet reveals that Erasmus believes the servant girl, Jeanne, read one of his letters and has fired her with instructions that she is to leave the following morning. Faith is relieved her father blamed someone else and feels certain Jeanne can find a new job. A new girl makes a mess at supper and Erasmus blames Myrtle for ineffectively handling the staff. He says he knows “there are limits to the female understanding” (93). After supper, Faith sees Jeanne crying miserably and knows she has to tell Erasmus the truth.
