Faith's cannot come up with a scientific reason that the Mendacity Tree would burst into flame when sunlight hits it, but it is fairly simple for the reader to answer that question based on symbolism. From a scientific point of view, it should not be possible for a tree to actually get its energy from lies, but the reader of this fictional novel will be able to accept that as fact. Traditionally, truth and light go hand-in-hand, and lies can only live as long as they remain in the shadows. With that symbolic reference, the reader can easily accept that the tree that feeds on lies and is supernaturally connected to lies can only survive in the darkness. Dim light is dangerous because it creates the possibility that the lie will be exposed, but bright light makes the lies obvious, symbolically killing them.
