Prejudice against women is one of the novel's main themes, and modern-day readers will likely find Dr. Jacklers' attitudes and theories to be ridiculous and offensive. In Chapter 22, we learn that Jacklers believes that women have smaller heads, which is a sign that they are intellectually inferior. He notes that few women are willing to let him actually completely measure their heads, which is why he is happy when Faith allows it. However, when her head is larger than he expects, he tries to tighten the screws more and accuses Faith of tensing her muscles to change the results.
