How does Faith use the gifts given to her mother to manipulate the men at the excavation site?

Faith is determined to be invited and welcomed at the excavation site. To get herself invited, she spends a little time with Dr. Jacklers and immediately begins manipulating him. She pretends to be confused about the gift he sent Myrtle, then corrects herself, saying that Clay sent the shawl. She knows that Dr. Jacklers is already paying court to Myrtle and she ensures that he knows he has competition. She knows that will make him feel less kindly to Clay, which is the first step in the division she is creating between the main participants in the excavation site.
