Faith compares her hunger for knowledge to a hunger for food. Ladies are supposed to eat very little at the table, and they are supposed to be satisfied with that amount of food. Faith refers to the “slim diet” of food and knowledge that girls are supposed to need, and she notes that “there was a delicious, poisonous pleasure in stealing” (7) the knowledge that she craves. That is why she has become so adept at blending in, which allows her to listen in on conversations, and she has become as skilled as a burglar, taking note of anything that will give her away as she tries to steal this knowledge.
