What was Pete's condition like when he was recovering in the hospital from his stroke?

While Pete was in the hospital recovering from his stroke, his condition fluctuated between really good and terrible. There were times when he was able to talk at length about places he'd been and people he'd seen while in the service, but other days when he could not even name a fork. He was completely incontinent and slurred his speech, so some members of his family and friends found it too difficult to come and visit him while he was awake.
