After Charlie was committed to the mental ward, Mary and Lecia often spent their days imagining what the hospital must look like since they weren't allowed to visit. Even though the girls regularly spoke with Pete about Charlie's whereabouts, he didn't give them much information, so the girls imagined most of it, drawing on images they had seen in films. In their imagination, the hospital where Charlie was kept was a hall of all white walls where patients were confined to straight jackets and regularly given shock therapy.
