What did Pete witness of the hurricane when he refused to evacuate to Lubbock with his family?

When Pete refused to leave for Lubbock with his family, he watched as a twenty-foot wall of water came in from the ocean and slammed into land. Miraculously, the hurricane changed direction and hit Louisiana much harder than Texas, taking many innocent casualties; instead, the water washed up many dangerous animals into the streets, such as sharks, snakes, and rats.
