When Grandma Moore moved in with the Karr family to recover from her amputation, the entire neighborhood sprung into action. The men offered to gut and rebuild the garage, turning it into a spare bedroom, while the women helped by making meals and cleaning the rest of the Karr home. Mary was struck by the distinct gender roles, and confused as to her deep connection to the men. She was deeply saddened when the the men's construction project was finished in August.
