As a final bid to win over her father's attention and affection, Mary began compulsively saving the Green Stamps her mother received during shopping trips. Mary begged stamps off strangers and even dug through the trash in search of the Green Stamps. When it finally came time to redeem them, however, Mary was disappointed to find that many of the items she desired were sold out. She was forced to purchase a boring statue of a monk for her father, and a can opener for her mother.
