Raynard Unwin is a publishing partner and the recipient of a large portion of letters found in the book. Unwin plays a gigantic and crucial role in the author's financial and career success. The letters between them include some personal information but focus mainly on their business relationship. However, since business is to some degree always personal, the letters reveal and share genuine information.

As Tolkien rather than Raynard is the focus of the book, the majority of letters are about the author and about the fiction novels themselves.
