Fire symbolizes the narrator's own experience with tragedy at the same time it symbolizes her attachment to her mother. The fire that engulfs their home traumatizes the narrator, who is only seven years old at the time. But it also provides the narrator with a story about her mother in which Anna appears mythic and beyond reality. Ultimately, the fire serves as a memory through which the narrator can remember her mother in the most meaningful light.
