Korelitz puts a modern spin on a classic family drama by having it narrated by a teenager. Phoebe’s tone as a narrator is lighthearted, empathetic, and humorous. Phoebe transports the reader back into the nineties when describing the triplets’ attitudes towards their parents: “Truly, all three of them were, in the idiom of the day and of their generation, not just over it but SO over it” (105). Such idioms create a realistic picture of American youth culture in the nineties. The novel centers around young adults and is appropriate for that age group.
