Who is Ilse Bruckner from The Last of the Just and what is their importance?

Ernie meets Ilse Bruckner during a re-enactment of the Passion of Christ, a re-enactment in which Ernie portrays the "people" who killed Jesus. Ernie has always admired Ilse, as she is a beautiful, young woman, who appears to be a good Christian. Years later, however, - the beautiful, little Christian girl watches without emotion when Hans and his gang attack Ernie..... the same day Ernie decides to take his own life.
