The wool hoodie represents Hannah’s newfound realization that she can take care of Bailey. While she did not previously know how to relate to Bailey or make her feel better, the moment that she offers her the hoodie constitutes the moment she realizes that she can be there for her and protect her. This moment is the gateway to Bailey seeing Hannah as a mother figure at the end of the novel.
