What is the author's style in The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry?

The author's style is simple and straightforward but the writing in the novel is often extremely beautiful and evocative. The author manages to create incredible word pictures without extraneous verbiage. Little dialogue is employed, and when it is used, it is concise and usually imparts some insight into the characters who speak it.
