In Part I, Chapter VIII, Willie notes that Callie is an amazing cook and a deeply religious woman. He also foreshadows the importance of his relationship with Callie by saying, "Thus began an unusual friendship that opened my eyes to many things, not the least of which was Southern cuisine."
