Saint-Martin-des-Champs was the monastery with a combat field and space for the thousands of spectators expected to attend the duel. The setting included a large section of ground where the actual duel was fought, stands where some of the noblemen were seated, an area for Marguerite, and a special dais for the king. The actual combat ground was surrounded by a heavy wooden fence meant to keep anyone from giving the men anything else to fight with and to protect spectators from thrown weapons or flying debris.
