What are colors?

There are several colors that carry symbolism in this story. Jean's family crest was crimson with silver markings. Jacques' crest was silver with a crimson slash. The author noted that the reversed colors were a symbol of the quarrel between the two. When Marguerite arrived at the combat field, she was wearing black as a traditional symbol of mourning because if Jean lost she would have gone directly to her own execution.
