Who is The Dean from The Last Continent: A Discworld Novel and what is their importance?

The Dean is one of the faculty members of Unseen University (UU) who in a search for a colleague, Rincewind, enter a tropical island thousands of years in the past and make their way to the last continent, Fourecks. The Dean is a bitter rival of Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully. They have been rivals since their student days some forty years ago. They bicker constantly throughout the novel. While accidentally marooned on Mono Island, the Dean is embarrassed when the housekeeper, Mrs. Whitlow, mentions that she must get back to UU to scrub some difficult stains out of his bedsheets. He pleads that he has merely dribbled tomato sauce on them while snacking in bed. His colleagues tease him.
