Haddish uses a conversational and causal tone to interact directly with her reader. The entirety of the book is peppered with expletives and casual interjections like "you know," which make the reader feel as though they are sitting down to a friendly conversation with Haddish (26). Most of the text can be read similarly to a stand-up act as well. Short sentences mirror punchlines Haddish might tell onstage, and the memoir is naturally brimming with hilarious and sometimes jaw-dropping stories. Regardless of how unbelievable her stories may sound, she is consistently engaging her reader with the use of those casual interjections, so that the reader can stay as engrained in the story as Haddish is.
