The story, The Provincials, includes a narrator, Nelson, who describes his and his father, Manuel, traveling to Manuel’s hometown to handle the affairs of the narrator’s recently deceased great-uncle. While in town, they run into a group of Manuel’s old acquaintances at a restaurant. Those men eventually reveal that they resent Manuel for abandoning them to live in the capital city. Throughout the encounter, Nelson impersonates his brother, Francisco, who lives in the United States.
