In "República and Grau," ten-year-old Maico's father strikes a deal for Maico and the blind man -- known only as such -- to be panhandling partners on a busy downtown intersection. The blind man is street-smart and also somewhat ruthless: he deliberately incites Maico's beating by his father so that the boy will look more pathetic, leading people on the street to give them more money.
