What surprises Downs about the area around the base camp in the autobiography, The Killing Zone: My Life in the Vietnam War?

Downs is surprised by the bucolic setting of the area and that normal life and farming activity continues in the village. He had images of the civilians being confined in fenced off areas, but this is obviously not possible.
