Private John Collins enlisted in the Corps on January 1, 1804. He was one of the Corps' hunters, along with Drouillard, Colter and the Field brothers. Early in the expedition, Collins was tried for getting drunk on duty. He pleaded non-guilty, but the Court decided otherwise, and he is sentenced to receive 100 lashes on his bare back. Collins continued his service with the Corps.
