Accoring to Equiano, there is a lot of cruelty, violence, and indifference in the military. The men make the boys fight each other so they can have a spectator sport to bet on, and men are forced to join the military whether they want to or not, which is not quite slavery but similar, especially since we know they could die in the next battle.
