Who is Relic-hunters from The Innocents Abroad and what is their importance?

Twain's group included relic-hunters, who brought little hammers with them so they could chisel off historical history to take home with them. Twain found the pratice both amusing and embarrassing, though he had the tact not to publish their names in his book.
