What particularly gruesome item is the group confronted with when it visits the Cathedral of Milan? How does Twain react to this artifact and why?

The group views a famous statue depicting a man without his skin. The sight is incredibly gruesome to Twain, and he is taken back to a time when, as a child, he was exposed to a real dead body. As with the real body, Twain is horrified by this statue.
