What are some of the challenges faced by Twain and his friends when trying to guide their donkeys to Ephesus?

First of all, the donkeys are too short. Each person must pile high homemade saddles on the creatures' backs just to be able to sit on the animal. The donkeys never go in the right direction, and their wobbliness makes items fall off of their backs and go plunging down the hill.
