Twain tells of a time where he felt the need to complain about his coffee being too weak, so he consults the ship's cook. As the days go by, his coffee seems to become weaker and weaker, eventually leading Twain to feel an audience with the captain of the ship is necessary. The captain tries the drink and tells Twain that it is tea. Needless to say, this embarrassment curbed much further complaining by Twain as the journey continued.
